      <image:title>Our Story - Our Story</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea for 314 Community was born from a simple but loving question about the future of secondary students in Uganda: “What will happen to the students when they graduate?” Our founder, Kelly Miller, who was the Dean of Student Life at school in Jinja, Uganda, was the recipient of that question. From that moment, Kelly was challenged to make sure there would be an acceptable answer. That school, like other boarding schools in Uganda, is mostly populated with students from humble communities who are supported by sponsorship organizations. Unfortunately, but understandably, these organizations often lack the resources necessary to continue the support for their students beyond high school. Once exposed to the reality of the challenges facing the sponsorship organizations who were sending students to secondary school, a small group of staff began to brainstorm about what an “alongside” program would look like to make sure every student had a real path to post-graduate education/ training and most importantly, the opportunity to transform their communities by living a visible, abundant, God-glorifying life. The result of those conversations was an idea for an organization which would directly and indirectly provide resources, funding, and discipleship for secondary school graduates. The name for the organization comes from 3 John 1:4 “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” In this verse, “walking in the truth” means to organize one’s life around the teachings of Jesus... even when it goes completely against the culture of the world. For the founder of the 314 Community, the staff, and board members, we know of no joy greater than to watch students walk in faith which challenges the culture around them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Problems - The Problems</image:title>
<image:caption>General Problem Child sponsorship organizations meet an urgent need in humble Ugandan communities by coming alongside families to provide the assistance needed for children to go to school. To be clear, without the critical efforts of these ministries and NGOs, most children from hard places in Uganda would not go to school. Unfortunately, however, 95% of all students in Uganda who start primary school fail to finish secondary school (equivalent of high school). For many understandable reasons, most sponsorships for students also stop after high school. The likely outcome for these students is a life of extreme difficulty since their certificate of secondary school graduation has no inherent value and unfortunately, there are very few opportunities for meaningful employment. In spite of multi-billions of dollars in funding and countless, well-intended programs running for decades, the outcomes from education for students in Uganda have remained largely unchanged. That is unacceptable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Solutions - 1. Discipleship</image:title>
<image:caption>In Uganda, we have seen the extraordinary benefit of having mentors walk with students in a relational discipleship model. We believe that a quality education, by itself, is not the answer to the problems facing young people in Uganda. In addition, job training or business development efforts will ultimately fail if students are not guided in their transition from high school. By providing continued Christ-centered mentoring in a safe environment, students will have the confidence and support to pursue the life and career they desire and for which they are gifted. 314 Community will ensure high school graduates have consistent mentoring, safe housing, and access to programs designed to walk with students in their faith journey.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Solutions - 2. Community Engagement</image:title>
<image:caption>If our ultimate vision is to see communities transformed through the efforts of transformed people, healthy relationships with the families of the students we support is requisite. In conjunction with our partners, our mentor staff will build and maintain value-based relationships, directly with our families. The goal is a simple one…. Friendships based on trust. In addition, since we are called to glorify God through loving actions toward others, regular service in the surrounding communities will always be central to everything we do. 314 Community endeavors to create opportunities for relationships to grow and flourish between our students and their families/communities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Solutions - 3. Furthering Education</image:title>
<image:caption>In a country like Uganda, where jobs are scarce and the opportunity to earn a meaningful income is limited, an advanced degree or certificate does not significantly change this unfortunate reality. Reason being, the vast majority of university level and/or vocational programs do not have practical learning as part of their curricula. In order to increase competencies/skills for our students, we will facilitate and resource hands-on training and internships with local businesses and tradespeople. Of course, this is in addition to making sure the funding is available for all “formal” education. 314 Community is committed to making sure that every student we support is equipped with all the training necessary to live out their faith through success in their chosen vocation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Solutions - 4. Career Facilitation</image:title>
<image:caption>When any student graduates from a university or vocational school in Uganda, it is inherently difficult to navigate the complexity of finding gainful employment. Regardless of the field of study, there are few, if any, mature or sophisticated job placement avenues, and access to investment capital is almost non-existent. For the students we support, there will be thoughtful and intentional career facilitation through existing business and government relationships, new business creation, and most importantly, entrepreneurial loans and grants with “alongside” mentorship. 314 Community is building partnerships with businesses, investors, and tradespeople to execute our strategy of creating opportunities for every student we support.</image:caption>
